2014 Neil Pryde Road Bike Range

What began as a company the produced sails in the 1970’s, quickly evolved into a world premier manufacturer of windsurfing equipment – with a strong emphasis on composite materials. Not surprisingly, the Hong Kong based, Neil Pryde, entered into the bicycle realm in 2011 – producing some very impressive road bikes – across a range of reasonable price points. In fact, for 2013, they became the bike of choice for the UnitedHealthcare racing Team. Here’s glimpse of their road bike line-up for 2014.

BURAsl

The stiff and ultra-lightweight road bike. It’s not just about the weight but what you do with it, too.

A number of changes were made to the BURAsl to further decrease the frame weight. The carbon lay-up was re-engineered to utilize longer strips of carbon pre-preg instead of shorter pieces, minimizing the number of overlapping layers.

Designed as the evolution of the award winning DIABLO, the BURAsl was performance engineered to achieve the highest stiffness to weight ratio, ensuring the most efficient and direct power transfer.

BURAsl’s front triangle is made from NEILPRYDE C6.9 uni-directional carbon fiber and incorporates our proprietary Exoskeleton technology. External carbon fiber ribs integrated in the key joints of the monocoque front triangle ensure the BURAsl frame responds immediately each time you step on the power.

The rear triangle incorporates our One-piece Stays, a unique design for the chain stay and carbon fiber dropout, together with ultra-thin seat stays. This combination enables the ride to be tuned for the perfect balance between power transfer and compliance.

Carbon fiber front and rear drop outs, a Press Fit 30 bottom bracket and carbon headset cups further reduce the frame weight without sacrificing durability or performance.

That is it: bare minimum weight and maximum performance. The only thing we piled on was the unflinching NEILPRYDE attitude, which weighs nothing.

HIGH STIFFNESS TO WEIGHT RATIO

BURAsl’s front triangle is made from NEILPRYDE C6.9 uni-directional carbon fiber, the highest modulus suitable for bikes resulting in super-light, 710g frame weight with no compromises on stiffness.

  • ONE-PIECE STAYS

Deep section chainstay combined with our One-piece Stays construction result in decreased weight, increased stiffness in the rear triangle and improved power transfer

  • PU MOLDING

A high-tolerance control of wall thickness in bottom bracket and head tube is possible through use of PU mandrel and internal layer of 3k carbon fiber

ZEPHYR

Introducing the all-new ZEPHYR road bike. Designed for the strongest of racers yet compliant enough for sportive cyclists, the ZEPHYR comes with a geometry suitable for the longest of races.

The ZEPHYR shares the same DNA as the rest of the NEILPRYDE range – bikes designed to be raced at the highest level. The front triangle is made from C6.7 carbon fiber and incorporates many of the same features developed for the race proven ALIZE and BURAsl.

OTP Comfort technology was first introduced in the BURAsl, and was the key factor that allowed the BURAsl to achieve the necessary vertical compliance without sacrificing stiffness. The concept has been further developed in the ZEPHYR with the unique tube profiles utilized in the seat stays and fork. Subtle shaping of the seat stays running into the seat tube, combined with specific carbon layup, increases the damping effect of the rear triangle. The curved fork blades absorb vibrations from uneven roads in order to maintain comfort during the longest of races and stability under braking and cornering.

The ZEPHYR geometry has been modified from that found on the ALIZE and BURAsl to include a slightly higher head tube to put less strain on your back and neck, a longer wheelbase and a shorter top tube. It’s the right way to get most riders, including many professionals, in the right position. With no need for high-rise stems or spacer stacks, the look is nothing but pro.

Vertical compliance, stable handling and efficient power transfer are key factors whether you are a seasoned pro or a weekend warrior. The ZEPHYR raises the enjoyment of cycling for riders of all levels.

VERTICAL COMPLIANCE

Tube shapes form the important base for the weight and mechanical properties of a frame. The combination of carbon fibers, modifications to alignment and the application of variable wall thickness increase vertical compliance while maintaining high levels of lateral and torsional stiffness.

ALIZE

The perfect all-around race bike. Aerodynamic, stiff and responsive, ALIZE carried the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling team to over 90 podiums in 2013.

ALIZE design reflects the balance between elegant engineering and insane speed. It draws on NEILPRYDE’s 40 years of experience working with the wind and 25 years of carbon fiber expertise.

BMW Group DesignworksUSA’s computational fluid dynamics analysis and NEILPRYDE’s optimised tube profile techniques combined to minimise drag while maintaining stiffness and the assured handling you expect from a pro-level race bike. Wider tube profiles have been incorporated to delay flow separation and maintain torsional rigidity. The unique down tube changes shape to manage both laminar and turbulent airflow, and the extended Kamm-tail creates an aerodynamic, lightweight and stiff bottom bracket.

The optional 78°sl TT/Tri seat post transforms the ALIZE from a traditional road geometry to a triathlon or time trial specific set up. Perfect, if you’re looking for one bike that can do it all.

The new ALIZE has been further upgraded:

  • Reduced frame weight: re-engineered carbon lay-up utilizing longer strips of pre-preg carbon to minimize the number of overlapping layers and reduce frame weight.
  • Increased power transfer: Press Fit 30 bottom bracket and proprietary one-piece chain stay/ dropout/seat stay construction.
  • Dual compatible: full internal cabling, compatible with either mechanical or electronic shifting.

All this makes the ALIZE the perfect aero race bike if you like to breakaway from the peloton, tackle the longest of training rides or throw in the occasional triathlon… just because you can.

AERODYNAMIC PERFORMANCE

  • Traditional 3:1 airfoil in head tube to manage relatively smooth, laminar airflow.

  • Airfoil shape combining a blunt leading edge with a longer trailing edge cleans up the turbulent airflow coming from the fork and rotating front wheel.

  • Kammtail airfoil, with a wide and truncated tail, combined with a narrower seat tube creates an extended virtual airfoil and results in a more aerodynamic and stiffer bottom bracket.

  • Traditional kammtail airfoil shields rear wheel.

POWER TRANSFER AND RESPONSIVENESS

Utilizing NEILPRYDE’s One-piece Staysdesign and PU Molding process enabled the aerodynamic ALIZE to be further developed into the ultimate race bike.

BAYAMO

The razor-sharp triathlon bike.

An aerodynamic, responsive and comfortable racing machine.

Designed in collaboration with BMW Group DesignworksUSA using sophisticated Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations, extensive wind tunnel testing and input from the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team’s TT specialists, BAYAMO is fast and trim, meeting the highest standards for aerodynamics, stiffness and comfort.

BAYAMO features NEILPRYDE’s unique Kamm-tail airfoil. While a traditional airfoil profile performs well at narrow yaw angles, it is inefficient at the wider yaw angles of up to 30° experienced by a rider during time trials and triathlons. The narrow profile and long trailing edge of a traditional airfoil are also structurally unsuitable for withstanding the dynamic forces of a powerful rider.

The NEILPRYDE Kamm-tail takes advantage of the phenomenon where the "tail" of the airfoil is truncated; cheating the wind into behaving like the truncated surface is still present and minimizing drag. The subtle chamfered trailing edge also reduces turbulence at wider yaw angles, dramatically improving aerodynamic performance.

The profile of the NEILPRYDE Kamm-tail airfoil is 10% wider than those found on other leading time trial bikes. This has the dual benefit of delaying flow separation, further reducing drag, and providing an inherent shape that is up to 60% stiffer than traditional airfoils.

The result is a frame that balances aerodynamic performance with the stiffness to weight ratios necessary for a professional level race machine.

ULTIMATE AERODYNAMIC PERFORMANCE

  • Deep section head tube for improved aerodynamics and management of laminar airflow, combined with the subtle integration of the Kamm-tail airfoil in the down tube to manage turbulent airflow from the rotating front wheel.

  • Chamfered trailing edge of the Kamm-tail airfoil in the down tube dramatically improves aerodynamics and decreases drag at wider wind angles.

KAMM-TAIL INTEGRATION

The Kamm-tail is seamlessly integrated into the trailing edges of the fork, seat tube and seat stays, further increasing stiffness-to-weight ratio and improving aerodynamics

POWER TRANSFER

Down tube is 10% wider than those found on other leading time trial bikes, and results in an inherent shape that is up to 60% stiffer than traditional airfoils.
