Happy birthday to Stan Ockers, who was born on this day in 1920, and died on October 1, 1956.

The Belgian rider is best remembered, as being both a formidable performer in Grand Tour events, as well as the one-day races.

Ockers’ list of accomplishments include, finishing 2nd in the 1950 Tour de France behind Ferdi Kubler of Switzerland, and 2nd again in the 1952 Tour de France behind Fausto Coppi of Italy.

In addition, Ockers won the Points Jersey in the Tour de France in 1955 and 1956, as well as 1955 World Championship Road Race in front of J-P Schmitz of Luxembourg and Germain Derycke of Belgium. He also placed  3rd in 1953 World Championship Road Race behind Fausto Coppi of Italy and Germain Derycke of Belgium, and 4th in the 1956 World Championship Road Race behind Rik Van Steenbergen of Belgium, Rik Van Looy of Belgium, and Gerrit Schulte of Holland.

In the one-day races, Ockers finished 2nd in the 1954 Paris-Roubaix Classic behind Raymond Impanis of Belgium, while he won the Liege-Bastogne-Liege Classic in 1955.

Additionally, Ockers won the Fleche Wallonne Classic in 1953 and 1955.
