Tour of Britain 2014 Stage 7

Omega Pharma-Quick Step’s Julien Vermote claimed stage 7 in this year’s Tour of Britain today, while overall race leader Alex Dowsett lost his yellow jersey to Dylan van Baarle.

Garmin-Sharp rider Van Baarle was part of a five-man breakaway with Vermote as the Tour made its way from Camberley to Brighton and now leads Michal Kwiatkowski in the general classification.

Britain’s Dowsett is back in 10th overall after finishing 27th on stage seven, with Team Sky’s Bradley Wiggins seventh overall after crossing the line in 14th.

Vermote sealed the 225.1km (140 mile) stage, the longest of the race, after launching an attack on the penultimate climb at Ditchling Beacon.

With Dowsett losing his yellow jersey, there was at least some good news for British cycling fans. Mark McNally took the point he needed to secure the King of the Mountains title for the An Post-Chain Reaction team.
