Bridgestone Develops Next-Generation Bicycle Tire Using “Air Free Concept”

Bridgestone claims to have developed a next-generation bicycle tire, using what they call Air Free Concept, which is a technology used to create tires that don’t require inflation.

According to Bridgestone, Air Free Concept is a technology that eliminates the need for tires to be inflated in order to support weight. Rather, the technology relies upon a unique structure of spokes stretching along the inner sides of tires, along with special resins and rubber compounds, to create its own structural support.

Bridgestone says, the premise of the Air Free Concept, was to develop tires that eliminate punctures, while still providing performance that’s on-par with traditional tires.

While the Air Free Concept achieves much in the way of innovation, Bridgestone says the technology also targets sustainability by using eco-friendly materials that support the ideas of environmental consciousness and “greener living”.

Bridgestone says, they’re hoping to bring the technology to market by 2019.

It will be interesting to see what implications Air Free Concept will have over time on the high performance segment of the bike industry.
