Giro initially pioneered the aerodynamic helmet category with the original Advantage back in 1985, and they’re now redefining it with two new models, the Aerohead Ultimate MIPS and Aerohead MIPS – touting them as the fastest time trial helmets they’ve ever designed.
Indeed, according to Giro, given the Aerohead Ultimate MIPS’ bold, minimalist profile coupled with a TeXtreme carbon fiber shell, the results have yielded what they’re calling the fastest aerodynamic helmet the brand has ever created.
Additionally, the Zeiss Optics wrap-around eye shield offers a wide field of view with a huge aerodynamic benefit, which affords cyclists outstanding clarity, while a magnetic anchor attachment keeps the shield secure, yet easy to remove, and it can be stored in the “flipped up” position.
In the case of the Aerohead MIPS, large vents and internal channeling serve to boost ventilation, which Giro says “keep triathletes and time trialists cool when the competition is hot.”
By using a polycarbonate shell, Wind Tunnel ventilation and internal channeling, Giro claims they were successful in boosting cooling power by nearly 10-percent over Aerohead Ultimate MIPS, while remaining extremely aerodynamic as well. And, similar to the Aerohead Ultimate MIPS, the wrap-around eye shield offers an impressive field of view with the convenience of magnetic attachments to allow easy storage of the lens in the “flipped up” position – perfect for fast swim-to-bike transitions.
Observed during this week’s Amgen Tour of California, the Aerohead MIPS series will go on sale beginning in August with a retail price of US$250 and a choice of five different colors.
The Aerohead Ultimate MIPS will be a bit further off — likely October — and will only be offered in two different colors, both with a whopping price tag of US$550.
