Happy birthday to Marino Basso, who was born on this day in 1945.
The Italian rider is best known for winning the 1972 World Championship Road Race in front of Franco Bitossi of Italy and Cyril Guimard of France.
In addition, Basso also won the Points Jersey in the 1971 Giro d’Italia.
His palmarès also include, finishing 3rd in the 1971 Paris-Roubaix Classic behind Roger Rosiers and Herman Van Springel of Belgium, along with numerous stage wins in the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a Espana during the late 60′ and 70’s, as well as several victories in many lesser known races throughout Europe.
