Ben Hermans (BMC Racing) put in a commanding performance during stage 2 of the Tour of Oman today, winning the first uphill stage of this year’s race and moving up into the overall lead with four stages remaining.

The 145.5 kilometer stage featured four climbs and was the first battle of the General Classification contenders with a short but steep finish on the Al Jissah climb.

It was a battle for a breakaway to go clear in the first hour with the peloton registering a blistering pace of 50km/hr.

Two riders, Mark Christian (Aqua Blue Sport) and Preben Van Hecke (Sport Vlaanderen-Baloise), eventually broke away and established an advantage of more than seven minutes over the peloton.

However, with 60 kilometers remaining, the peloton began to chase the down the escapees in earnest, ultimately reining them in during the final 20 kilometers.

From there, a series of further attacks ensued, subsequently splitting the peloton in half during the final approach to the finish, with Hermans and his teammate Greg Van Avermaet finding themselves in perfect position along the final climb.

Van Avermaet attacked with 1.5 kilometers to go, only to be overtaken by Merhawi Kudus (Dimension-Data).

However the BMC rider commenced a second attack, this time paving the way for Hermans to make a final surge for the line – easily eclipsing Rui Costa (UAE Abu Dhabi) and Jakob Fuglesang (Astana Pro Team) to seize the victory.

Hermans now leads the Tour of Oman by four seconds over Costa, and with six seconds on Fuglesang.
