After the Prudential RideLondon Classique, the peloton had one weekend off to prepare for the upcoming races in Sweden, Norway, France and the Netherlands: 13 UCIWWT race days over 23 days. But not all the peloton opted to rest. The Europeans raced in Glasgow for the European Championships, with former UCI World Champion Marta Bastianelli (Italy) taking the gold medal.
With no points for the UCI Women’s WorldTour awarded in Glasgow, nothing has changed in the UCIWWT’s overall standings. Anna van der Breggen (Boels Dolmans Cyclingteam) still leads the classification with 1,127 points, just 50 points ahead of her compatriot Annemiek van Vleuten (Mitchelton Scott). Australian Amanda Spratt (Mitchelton Scott) follows in third place with 1,008 points.
In the teams classification, Boels Dolmans Cyclingteam leads with 3,246 points ahead of Mitchelton Scott (3,094) and Canyon // SRAM Racing (1,728). Sofia Bertizzolo (Astana Women’s Team) still dominates the Youth Ranking with 36 points ahead of German Champion Liane Lippert (Team Sunweb / 14 points) and Jeanne Korevaar (WaowDeals Pro Cycling / 14).
Saturday, August 11th, Postnord UCI WWT Vargarda WestSweden TTT (Sweden)
A former runner, Danielle Christmas, 30, turned to cycling in 2013, riding for European club teams. Despite breaking her back, Christmas made a comeback, and this year graduated to her first UCI Women’s Team, Spanish outfit Bizkaia Durango – Euskadi Murias.
A strong climber, she took her first professional victory last month at the UCI 1.2 classified Tour de Belle Isle en Terre – Kreiz Breizh (France). That win, ahead of an excellent field, earned Christmas a call up to the British national team for last weekend’s European Championships in Glasgow, where she was seen helping animate the race.
