Matteo Trentin (hick-step Floors) claimed his second stage victory in this year’s Vuelta a Espana today, after winning a two-man sprint against José Joaquín Rojas (Movistar) in Elpozo Alimentation.

Meanwhile, Chris Froome (Team Sky) remains in the red leader’s jersey, while Esteban Chaves (ORICA-SCOTT) held onto second place, despite Nicolas Roche (BMC Racing Team) picking up 27 seconds to receive the same time as his Colombian rival.

Race Highlights

Trentin was part of a four-rider escape group that succeeded in riding clear from the day’s 20-strong breakaway group along the first-category climb.

However, at the bottom of the long 20 kilometer descent, only he and Rojas emerged as the leaders.

From there, Rojas led out the sprint, while Trentin followed in his slipstream along final right-hand bend, before unleashing his own acceleration during the closing 100 meters that proved unassailable for his Spanish rival.

Back in the main field, Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) launched a spirited attack along the challenging descent, but the Italian rider was unable to gain any time on Froome et al.
