Team Drapac put their stamp on this year’s Woodside Tour de Perth, after William Clarke won the opening stage yesterday.
Clarke beat Shannon Johnson and Anthony Giacoppo in a sprint finish during last evening’s 45 kilometer criterium in Fremantle, after avoiding a serous crash on the final straight.
“It was just really hectic,” Clarke said.
“Guys were fighting for wheels and unfortunately there was a crash there at the end.
“The plan was to try and get some time in the intermediate sprints and I found myself there at the end in a good position to sprint.
“It was such a tight course you had to be at the front or basically your race was over.”
Clarke leads the race by four seconds over Giacoppo, with team Budget Forklifts’ Alex Wohler in third.
The event marked the opening of Perth’s Velofest, which runs until Sunday, which comprises the Woodside Tour de Perth, Fly6 UWCT Perth and National Para-cycling Series events as well.
