2014 Trofeo Deià (Challenge Mallorca)

Michal Kwiatkowski won the Trofeo Deià in a solo victory today – as part of this year’s 2014 Challenge Mallorca.

Edvald Boasson Hagen and Francesco Gavazzi rounded out the podium in second and third place.

Today’s race was a 153 kilometer route that contained no fewer than five categorized climbs, to include the challenging category 1 climb of the Coll de Puig Major.

Indeed, it was on the climb Coll de Puig Major that the day’s early breakaway became splintered, with a small group containing Javier Megias Leal, Antonio Piedra Perez, Petr Vakoc, Tanel Kangert and Jeus Del Oino riding clear. However, Kwiatkowski and Sergio Henao subsequently launched a pursuit from the ranks of the peloton – and made contact with the escapees as they crested the summit.

Under the determination of riders like Chris Honer and Edvald Boasson, the peloton   managed to reel in the escapees in the closing six kilometers. However, at that point, Kwiatkowski decided to make a go of it on his own. And, during last 2 kilometers he succeeded in establishing an insurmountable gap of 28 seconds that held all the way to the finish.
