Bradley Wiggins put in a dominating performance in today’s individual time trial at this year’s Amgen Tour of California, to claim stage 2 and the overall race lead.
Wiggins completed the 12.5-mile course in Folsom in 23 minutes and 18 seconds with an average speed of 32 mph. Wiggins is competing in the Tour of California for the first time in six years.
Meanwhile, Rohan Dennis (Garmin-Sharp) of Australia, finished second, 44 seconds behind Wiggins, with American Taylor Phinney taking was third spot, another eights seconds behind.
Wiggins, the 98th rider in the field of 128, now leads the eight-day, 720-mile event by 44 seconds over Dennis. Phinney is third overall, trailing by 52 seconds.
Mark Cavendish, who held the first-day lead after his sprint win in stage 1, finished 27th in today’s stage.
