Michael Rogers emerged victorious during today’s stage 20 of the 2014 Giro d’Italia, after a solo finish atop the infamous Monte Zoncolan.
Rogers was part of a 20 man breakaway group, that got underway earlier on in today’s stage. However, as the escapees tackled the brutal climb of the Zoncolan, the compliment of riders began to diminish greatly.
From there, the race unfolded into a battle between Rogers and Francesco Bongiorno, with both riders experiencing interference from an overzealous crowd.
Indeed, during the final 3 kilometers, a fan attempted to push Bongiorno, which resulted in the Italian rider almost crashing. In fact, he had to unclip from his pedals in order to prevent himself from falling. This in turn, caused him to lose ground with Rogers, who continued onward oblivious to what had happened.
Additionally, fans were equally overzealous with riders in the maglia rosa group, wherein a fan wrapped in the Colombian flag proceeded to bear hug race leader Nairo Quintana along the climb.
Fortunately, Quintana managed to survive the episode, and continued along undeterred to defend his grip on the overall race lead.
Meanwhile, Rigoberto Urán remains in second place in the overall general classification, while Fabio Aru held onto his third spot on the podium.
