The microprocessor giant, Intel, along with rapper 50 Cent, have partnered with SMS Audio, to launch a new set of earphones that can monitor heart rate, and send the information to a compatible smartphone.
The new earphones incorporate an optical sensor, wherein a beam of light is "shot" into the ear lobe, which in turn measures the expansion of blood flow in one’s capillaries, and times it in accordance with heartbeat. From there, data can sent via app like RunKeeper, so cyclist can monitor their training "zones".
In the meantime, Intel and SMS Audio are developing their own app that will allow users to to change music playlists based on their heart rate.
The earphones use a standard 3.5mm jack, and are powered by the user’s smartphone. Furthermore, they’re IPX4 certified, so there’s no worries about sweat or cycling in the rain.
