Orbea is working with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to recall approximately 715 Avant bikes and framesets, because of concerns over breaking forks. The relevant forks were for use with disc brakes.
The CPSC said Orbea has reported no incidents or injuries as a result of cracked forks, but said the forks create a fall hazard.
The recall involves all Avant bikes and framesets that are capable of being used with hydraulic disc brakes.
According to the CPSC, the model numbers are not marked on the bicycles and there is also no color or gender designation to identify the relevant bikes and framesets. According to the CPSC, the recalled bikes have the word Avant in black or white on the top and head tube and the word Orbea in white on the top and down tube. The CPSC also is distributing photos of an Avant bike with rim brakes along with the recall notice.
The Orbea website, however, contains a page where consumers can type in their bike’s identification number, which is found on a sticker beneath a barcode on the underside of the downtube. The site will tell consumers whether their fork is one of those being recalled. The Orbea site also has photos of a disc brake-equipped fork.
Consumers are being told to immediately stop using the recalled bicycles and contact Orbea for a free replacement and installation of a new fork.
The bikes were sold in the U.S. from August 2013 to June 2014 for between $1,200 and $9,000.
Orbea can be reached toll-free at (888 466-7232 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or e-mail at avantsupport.us@orbea.com.
