Six Days of Ghent 2014 Day 6

Jasper De Buyst and his teammate Kenny De Ketele (Baloise Insurance) took victory in the final Madison at this year’s Six Days of Ghent – giving the Belgian duo the overall victory ahead of Omega Pharma-QuickStep’s Mark Cavendish and Iljo Keisse.

Meanwhile, Leif Lampater and Silvan Dillier (Caruur) rounded out eh podium in third spot.

With the overall victory hinging on the outcome of the final sprint, De Buyst and De Ketele went into the final race of the night with equal laps and 52-point advantage over their closest rivals.

Cavendish and Keisse were the first to move ahead in the standings, after beating Lampater and Dillier in the team elimination.

However, despite having a slower start in the day, De Buyst and De Ketele  edged their way back into the lead, after winning the the 500 meter sprint – due to a bonus lap that brought them to the 400 point mark.

Still, Cavendish and Keisse kept the fight alive, by winning the final Derny race, however, that wasn’t enough to topple their rivals.

For the second year in a row, Jasper de Buyst has won the prestigious Six-Days of Ghent race. Last year he did so with Leif Lampater at his side.

The Belgian rider had this to say to the Belgian newspaper, Het Nieuwsblad, about his victory:

"This is wonderful, especially after a very exciting finale."  "It’s incredible to win this Six-Day for the second year in a row. Also, the way we did it, by always riding very offensively.

"I’m very happy, especially after I began this Six-Day with a lot of coubt. Had I recovered enough after my crash in Mexico? Would I have too many problems with my injuries? Until today, I always had those questions in my head. We can now celebrate and then we will prepare for Zurich. During the first days in Ghent, I did not have a good feeling. I knew what I had done to reach my best for this race and then I had that stupid crash in Mexico.

"Next year I will ride for the Lotto Soudal team. We have to wait and see how my road season will go. But now I am going to enjoy this great victory."
