André Greipel won stage 1 of this year’s Tour of Luxembourg, after claiming victory in a bunch sprint finish in Hesperange today.
Meanwhile, Danny van Poppel (Trek Factory Racing) retained the overall race lead after finishing third in today’s stage.
Race Highlights
A three-man breakaway group containing Boris Dron (Wanty-Groupe Gobert), Juan Pablo Valencia (Colombia) and Giuseppe Fonzi (Neri Sottoli), got underway early on in today’s stage. However, the ever watchful Lotto Belisol and Trek Factory Racing squads never allowed the trio’s advantage to go beyond 5 minutes.
Indeed, with just over 3 kilometers remaining, the escapees were caught by the peloton, with Matti Breschel launching a subsequent attack of his own. But, he too was swept up during the closing few hundred meters of today’s stage as well.
From there, Greipel succeeded in defending off his rivals by unleashing one of his signature sprints to the line – to easily beat Michael Mørkøv (Tinkoff-Saxo), with Van Poppel holding off Jempy Drucker for third.
