Hutarovich wins Tour of Poland 1st stage
Yauheni Hutarovich (Ag2r La Mondiale) won the first stage of this year’s Tour of Poland today.
The AG2R rider edged out Roman Maikin (RusVelo) and Manuele Mori (Lampre-Merida) in a sprint finish in a crash-plagued 226 kilometer race from Gdansk to Bydgoszcz.
Other top GC contenders such as Rafal Majka (Tinkoff-Saxo), Pieter Weening (Orica-GreenEdge) and Warren Barguil (Giant-Shimano), also finished in the pack.
A five-man breakaway got underway early on in today’s stage. However, heavy rain and hail reaped havoc on both the escapees, as well as the chase – with fallen debris and slippery roads causing crash after crash.
Maciej Paterski (CCC Polsat Polkowice) succeeded in riding clear of his breakaway companions during the final kilometer. However, he was quickly reeled in by the chase – with Hutarovich emerging as the strongest rider.
