Trek is taking over team sponsorship from Colnago, which has sponsored Nys for his entire professional career. Today’s announcement came with no surprise to the cyclocross community, since the Belgium newspaper Nieuwsblad reported on the deal back in August.
Trek also sponsors World Cup champion Katie Compton, who races for the Trek Cyclocross Collective team. Compton and Nys will both attend a news conference to unveil new Trek cyclocross models on New Year’s Day at the GP Sven Nys race in Baal, Belgium.
Matt Shriver of Trek’s Race Shop has been at the forefront of Trek’s strong move into cyclocross in recent season. He said signing Nys is another step in the brand’s commitment to the sport.
"When we really dedicated ourselves to cyclocross a few years back, we had a strategy to support racing with the full commitment of our product development team and partner with some of the biggest names in the sport," Shriver said. "This move in particular is a huge step for us, and one that we are really excited to take."
Meanwhile, Nys issued a press release stating:
“The partnership with Trek and the work we put into the bikes is another dimension for me in cyclocross.” “I am really happy to be part of the family of Trek and to do something special with them.”
In addition, the Belgian television station, Sporza, reported today that Nys would continue racing until 2016, when the two-time world champion turns 40 years old.
