Matteo Pelucchi claimed stage 2 of this year’s Vuelta a Burgos today, after fending off Giant-Shimano teammates Steven Lammertink and Thomas Damuseau in a sprint finish.
Meanwhile, yesterday’s stage winner, Juan Jose Lobato (Movistar), managed to hold onto the overall race lead.
Race Details
A five-man breakaway group containing Javier Francisco Aramendia (Caja Rural), Mirko Tedeschi (Neri Sottoli), Adrien Niyonshuti (MTN-Qhubeka), Pablo Torres (Burgos-BH), and Sergei Pomoshnikov (RusVelo), got underway early on in today’s stage. However, the escapees never succeeded in riding more than two and a half minutes outside the grasp of the peloton. And, as the race headed into the final 25 kilometers, their advantage had fallen to just 45 seconds.
With the peloton closing in, Aramendia decided to make a go of it on his own – subsequently building up a slight lead of 1:05 over his breakaway companions.
However, as the race entered into the final 10 kilometers, all of the escapees, to include Aramendia, were eventually reeled in by the peloton.
From there, the field held together for the remaining 10 kilometers. And, it wasn’t until the race headed into the final 500 meters, that Pelucchi made his winning move.
The Italian rider surged during the final right hand turn – a move that was quickly matched by Lammertink and Damuseau. However, Pelucchi proved to have enough impetus, to out-sprint the Giant-Shimano riders in a head-to-head battle for the finish.
