Lloyd Mondory (Ag2r La Mondiale) claimed stage 4 of this year’s Vuelta a Burgos, after winning a sprint finish following a perfectly timed lead out by his teammate Sebastien Turgot – during the final 300 meters.
Turgot made his way up the front of the peloton, and took up the pace setting through the two final corners – with Mondory nicely tucked in his slipstream. Only Vicente Reynes (IAM Cycling) was able to keep pace with them, however, he proved to be no challenge for the Ag2R riders.
Meanwhile, Nairo Quintana (Movistar) was forced to surrender the overall race lead to Daniel Moreno (Katusha), after he losing time to his rival.
Unfortunately, Quintana found himself on the wrong side of the split during the waning moments of today’s stage, which conceded the one second deficit he held over Moreno. Although, the Colombian rider did manage to hold onto his lead in the King of the Mountains competition.
Race Details
A seven- man breakaway group containing Jonathan Fumeaux (IAM Cycling), Fabio Taborre (Neri Sottoli), Axel Domont (Ag2r La Mondiale), Ibai Salas (Burgos – BH), Egor Silin (Team Katusha), Miguel Minguez (Euskadi) and Javier Moreno (Movistar Team), got underway early on in today’s stage.
From there, the breakaway group proceeded to hold 2:40 advantage over the chase, up until the 72 kilometer mark. However, as the race entered into the final 36 kilometers, their gap dwindled to a mere 17 seconds. And, a further 10 kilometers later, the escapees were reeled in by the peloton.
At that point, Mondory’s teammate, Blel Kadri, launched an attack on the final climb of the day, bringing Alexandr Kolobnev (Team Katusha) along with him. However, the duo never strayed much beyond the grasp of the peloton.
Indeed, a fast descent on the part of the peloton, led to the escapees being caught during the final 4 kilometers.
