First spotted at last weekend’s UCI Gravel World Championships, Canyon has officially introduced its all-new Grail gravel bike, featuring a lighter and stiffer version of the German brand’s CFR frameset that shaves a claimed 118 grams, as well as a 10% increase in rigidity in the areas of the bottom bracket and head tube. The fork also sees a 4.5% increase in stiffness thanks to a new 1 ⅛ diameter steerer tube. Moreover, Canyon has developed what it calls a “fork sleeve”, a new design that allows riders to carry more bottles or attachments on the fork legs, while additional mounts on frame allow for the brand’s proprietary mudguards and three bottles.
Clearance is also up on the new Grail, which can accommodate tires up to a beefy 42mm, even with the mudguards in place. The geometry has also been tweaked, featuring a 28mm longer wheelbase in size M, and a trail of 69 mm across sizes small to large. Also, the head tube now has 71.5 degree angle across most of the sizes, along with 75mm bottom bracket drop. The top tube has also been given slightly more slope, resulting in a shorter seat tube. Moreover, all sizes now roll on 700c wheels instead of smaller 650b hoops.
Elsewhere, the new Grail forgoes the funky Double Decker in handlebar in favor of Canyon’s “Double Drop” CP0039 model, which features a five-degree swept-back profile, along with five-degrees of flare at the hoods, while widening to 16 degrees at the drops. In addition, there’s also the CP0047 bar that’s available aftermarket, which sees a narrower, 400mm width, along with a negative angled stem with 15 mm more drop compared to the CP0039.
Additionally, Canyon has also added its new SP0072 Comfortpost to the Grail, which utilizes a D-Shape design in order to dial-in the right amount of flex, while also reducing weight by 42 grams compared to the out-going Grail’s S15 VCLS 2.0 system.
Lastly, Canyon has treated the new Grail to its “Aero Load System”, which consists of the “Quick Loader” bag that attaches to the bottom of the top tube via a Fidlock system. However, the base CF SL model only gets the “Load Down Tube Storage” system, which is basically a small compartment that can store tools such as a min pump, Canyon’s six-piece multitool and a tool pack that can hold tire levers, a CO2 cartridge, a CO2 Inflator and a TPU inner tube.
The new Grail in offered in three guises, the Grail CF SL, Grail CF SLX and the Grail CFR with eight build options, along with seven sizes ranging from 2XS to 2XL.
Here’s how the models breakdown:
