Cervélo is defying gravity with the launch of its new R5, which tips the scales at an unprecedented 5.97kg (13 pounds), making it the lightest production road bike on the market, and a whopping 800 grams under the UCI’s weight limit.
According to Cervélo, the frame tips the scales at a scant 651 grams in a size 56, while the fork weighs in at an equally feathery 298g. If that’s not enough, the R5 further cuts weight courtesy of Cervélo’s new HB18 one-piece cockpit, resulting in an overall weight reduction of 326 grams over its predecessor.
Additionally, Cervélo continued the R5’s diet with a hefty portion of unsprung rotational mass (reduced that is) via its latest Reserve 34 | 37 wheelset, which drops 60 grams over the previous model.
Oh, and clearance was also slightly increased, making way for tires up to 29mm.
The new R5 is available as a frameset only, or in five different build options in black / bronze and black / silver paint schemes.
The build options include SRAM Force and Red AXS builds, including a Red 1X version, as well as Shimano Ultegra and Dura-Ace Di2.
The R5 frameset retails for $6,500, while complete bikes start at $9,950 for a SRAM Force AXS equipped model and rise to $14,250 for the top-tier SRAM Red AXS version.
