Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) stamped his authority on stage 4 of the Critérium du Dauphiné today, setting a blistering pace that saw the Belgian rider set a fastest time of 41:49 during today’s 34.4km individual time trial, ultimately handing him the overall race lead.
Meanwhile, Josh Tarling (Ineos Grenadiers) came in 17-seconds down on Evenepoel, with Primož Roglič (Bora-Hansgrohe) finishing the race against the clock a further 22-seconds later to claim the final spot on the podium.
Tarling had set an early benchmark, spending most of the day in the hot seat before being dethroned by Evenepoel, who went through the first checkpoint two seconds quicker than his rival, before losing time during the second checkpoint. However, it was the finish that counted, with Evenepoel breezing to victory.
Elsewhere, the last rider down the ramp was race leader Derek Gee (Israel Premier-Tech), who despite putting in a valiant effort to hold onto the yellow jersey, finished in sixth, 1:24 down on Evenepoel.
