Fulcrum has rolled out its latest Soniq 42 wheelset, offering the same distinctive 2-wave rim technology as the Italian brand’s top-of-the-line Sharq, but for far less money thanks to a less costly carbon lay-up process.
The Soniq 42 features the same undulating 42-47mm rim depth as its more expensive sibling, along with a 25mm, hooked 2-Way-Fit internal width, with lacing that comes courtesy of 24 straight-gauge, stainless steel straight-pull spokes that are oriented in a symmetrical 2x lacing. To further keep costs down, the Soniq spins on sealed steel bearings instead of costlier cup and cone ceramics.
All in, Fulcrum says the new Soniq 42 tips the scales at 1,595 grams, a weight that won’t win any plaudits from the weight weenies crowd, but a respectable figure none the less for an all-around wheelset.
Despite being 25% less expensive than the Sharq, the Soniq 42 still fetches a hefty 1590€ (about $2080), which is available with either a Shimano HG, MicroSpline, SRAM XDR or Campagnolo N3W freehub body.
