The U.S. Champion Megan Guarnier (Boels Dolmans Cycling Team) claimed stage 2 of this year’s Giro Rosa in San Fior di Sotto yesterday, beating Anna Van der Breggen (Rabo-Liv), Ashleigh Moolman (Bigla Pro Cycling Team) and Elisa Longo Borghini (Wiggle Honda), in a sprint finish.
High temperature punctuated yesterday’s stage, as the peloton stayed together for the first half of the race. However, midway in the day, Carlee Taylor (Lotto Soudal Ladies) and the Brazilian rider, Flavia Oliveira, managed to escape the peloton, subsequently building up a modest advantage of about 2 minutes.
Back in the peloton, Piai Taylor was the first rider over the day’s KOM climb, but she later crashed along the decent.
From there, Elisa Longo Borghini and Mara Abbott (Wiggle Honda), Katarzyna Niewadoma and Anna Van der Breggen (Rabo-Liv), Evelyn Stevens and Megan Guarnier (Boels Dolmans), succeeded in catching the lingering two escapees.
The quintet would go on to form a lead group, that ultimately boiled down to a sprint finale, with Guarnier emerging as the strongest rider.
