Paul Seixas doubled up on his victories in the Itzulia Basque Country today, after the French rider claimed his second consecutive win with a stinging attack atop the climb of the San Miguel de Aralar with just under 7 kilometers to go, breezing past the remnants of the day’s breakaway group in solo fashion.

Meanwhile, Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek) and Primož Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) finished almost a minute and a half behind Seixis to round out the podium.

Race Highlights

Frank van der Broek (Picnic PostNL), Ethan Hayter (Soudal-QuickStep), Joan Bou (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) and Iker Mintegi (Euskatel-Euskadi) were the first riders to escape the peloton, with the quartet quickly being joined by the likes of Adrián Fajardo (Burgos BH Burpellet), Raul García Pierna (Movistar) and Bruno Armirail (Visma-Lease a Bike).

From there, the escapees went on to open up a modest advantage of around two minutes over the peloton.

The leaders remained out front for most of the stage, until Seixas caught and passed in what remained of the day’s breakaway with 6.6 kilometers remaining.

In the meantime, riders such as Roglič, Skjelmose, Isaac del Toro, Florian Lipowitz, Cian Uijtdebroeks, Ion Izagirre and Alex Baudin tried to rein in Seixas, but there was no stopping the Frenchman, who easily sailed to victory.
