Up until now, if a rider was seeking comfort, ventilation, aerodynamics and protection in one kit, he or she probably had to settle for just two. But, Nalini decided to answer the call with its DYNEEMA jersey and bib short, two technical garments that promise the aforementioned accolades – even protection.
As the title implies, the jersey and bib short both incorporate an innovative fabric called Dyneema, a woven, kevlar-like material that’s constructed from ultra high molecular polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber monofilaments and polyester, resulting in a protective membrane that’s lightweight, highly breathable and contouring.
However, Nalini calls its version of Dyneema, Kinetech PROTEKT, which has been applied to the shoulders of the jersey and the hips of the bib short, two key areas that usually take the brunt of most crashes. Moreover, in addition to its structural properties, the Kinetech PROTEKT fabric is also highly resistant to UV rays and chemicals, while its hydrophobic characteristics help to keep the mesh areas dry even in cases of extreme humidity or heavy rain.
Elsewhere, the jersey features ultra-light fabric that’s aimed at promoting rapid evaporation of sweat by providing constant airflow, keeping the rider dry even on the hottest days, along with a full-length YKK cam-lock zipper, a silicone gripper waist and laser-cut sleeves that provide a precise and comfortable fit.
Additionally, there are three large rear pockets that are ideal for stowing small items such as energy bars or gels, as well as reflective piping on the rear pockets for enhanced visibility on the road.
In the case of the bibs, the upper section is treated to a super-light mesh material that relies on thermo-taped edges instead of seams, ensuring maximum breathability and optimal grip on the body, while the legs feature clean-cut, silicone-free grippers that nicely anchor the bibs to the skin without creating annoying pressure points.
As for padding, comfort is provided courtesy of Nalini’s Randonnée 2.0 chamois.
So, with all of this tech, how does the kit perform?
Given the membrane-like characteristic of the Kinetech PROTEKT, I was initially concerned that it could cause an encapsulating effect on the body, resulting in poor breathability.
In fact, the material had the opposite effect, providing plenty of ventilation during most riding conditions. Still, I wondered if the panels might trap perspiration on days when the mercury really began to spike, creating a soggy feeling against the body.
To the contrary, even on the hottest of rides, the garments remained composed, conceding nothing in the way of ventilation. As for the chamois, the Randonnée 2.0 proved to be on par with most premium pads, offering the requisite amount of density and moisture management during the most grueling of rides.
Also, I especially liked the wide straps and ventilated rear cross section, which secured the bibs perfectly across my chest and shoulders, while also offering excellent ventilation. Why some brands still resort to using spaghetti straps is beyond me!?!
So, where does the protection aspect come into play?
According to Nalini, the reason for adding the Kinetech PROTEKT to the shoulders and hips is its ability to resist tearing during a crash, which often results in severe abrasions for the rider. Fortunately, this was one facet of the apparel that I didn’t have to find out. So, I’ll just have trust in Nalini’s word that the material is as effective as claimed.
Regarding fit, like most of Nalini’s top-tier apparel, the DYNEEMA jersey and bib short are aimed at enthusiasts and professionals who are conditioned, featuring a very close fit that’s designed to act and feel like a second skin. So, if you’re not at your fighting weight, I suggest that you bust-out your Suzanne Somers work-out video, or stick to a strict diet of Wasa Crackers and water, in between rides.
The DYNEEMA jersey and bib short don’t come cheap, fetching €197.00 and €250.00, respectively.
