Hammerhead has launched the third generation of its Android-powered Karoo GPS bike computer, boasting a host of new updates including upgraded hardware, SRAM AXS integration and a new companion app.
In addition to its more robust body, the new Karoo now features four hardware buttons on the unit’s sides, which are spaced wider than the previous generation, allowing riders to navigate the device’s functions more easily, especially when wearing gloves, while the power button has been relocated to a better access point.
Additionally, the new Karoo offers a claimed 30% more battery life, providing up to 15 hours. Hammerhead also says the computer will charge up more quickly, reaching a full charge in 2 1/2 hours, or for riders on the go, 30% in just 30 minutes.
Hammerhead also says the Karoo’s GPS signal is now more accurate, thanks to a following satellite systems, while memory has been doubled to 64GB.
Elsewhere, a new companion app (for iOS and Android) has been developed for the Karoo, allowing riders to upload rides, synchronize routes and workouts, and use live tracking by using a connected phone’s signal. Moreover, routes and workouts can also be shared and synced with the head unit.
Hammerhead has also expanded the mapping capability on the new Karoo, letting riders share a pin from Google or Apple Maps to the companion app so the computer can configure a route.
Other features that highlight the Karoo include a new “workout player”, which is compatible with the TrainerRoad and Training Peaks indoor cycling apps, along with a dedicated start-stop feature on the screen and customizable data fields, while ANT+ and Bluetooth connectivity allow for peripherals such as heart rate monitors, power meters, connected lights and radar systems to be used.
Lastly, the Karoo can now sync with SRAM’s latest AXS groupsets and components, including the new Red AXS groupset, allowing riders to customize the functionality of an AXS drivetrain without having to engage with the AXS app, including the ability to change the functions assigned to buttons.
Also, a new feature enables automatic sensor pairing and detailed battery data, including low-battery warnings, when registered with your new or existing AXS account.
The new Karoo sells for $474.99 / £449.99 / €499.99 / AU$749.99 / CA$699.99, which includes a Hammerhead-specific mounting system for 31.8mm handlebar, a quarter-turn mount adaptor, a tethering lanyard and a USB-C charge cable.
