Inaugural Sturgis Gran Fondo Announced

After playing host to a bunch of beer-drinking, tattoo-wearing, two-wheeled renegades, for the last 75 years, organizers for the famous Sturgis Motorcycle Rally have decided to induce the Sturgis Gran Fondo – a cycling event for yet another type of beer-drinking, tattoo-wearing, two-wheeled renegades – albeit without a motor this time.

This weekend’s 120-mile ride will begin on the streets of historic downtown Sturgis, where riders will be escorted out of town by motorcycle officers—just like they’ve done for the motorcycle rally these past 75 years.

The route will consist of such epic scenery as, Vanocker Canyon Road, Nemo Road and Mt. Rushmore Road.

Two-time Motocross Champion, Supermoto Champion and Pikes Peak Hill Climb record holder and avid road biker, Micky Dymond came up with the idea for this weekend, “An outlaw style fondo and crit through the streets of Sturgis, out into the black hills of South Dakota to Mt. Rushmore and to finish at a biker saloon on Main Street, what more could you ask for?” Comments Dymond, Founder of the event. “This is going to be a one of a kind event, with so much history and beauty around us.”

Overview

You’re invited for the inaugural Sturgis Gran Fondo. Your day in the saddle will start on the streets of historic downtown Sturgis. You’ll be escorted out of town by motorcycle officers—just like they’ve done for the motorcycle rally these past 75 years. The route is a cyclist’s dream on the roads that the local riders love; Vanocker Canyon Road, Nemo Road and Mt. Rushmore Road. You’ll enjoy marshaled intersections, incredible twisties, switch-backs, challenging hills that drop into scenic river-valleys all complimented by excellent pavement that is well maintained through the non-winter months. There will be aid stations along the way with water, sports drinks, snacks and mechanical support.
