Officina Battaglin, the namesake of cycling legend Giovanni Battaglin, has announced the launch of its latest bespoke gravel bike dubbed the Matera, drawing its inspiration from from Italy’s oldest city.
Handcrafted in Officina Battaglin’s workshop in northern Italy by the hands of true craftsmen, the Matera is built from Columbus Spirit HSS tubing that’s carefully fillet-brazed by skilled artisans, with each frame carrying the unmistakable Battaglin signature style, conferring “precision, elegance, and a ride quality that only handmade steel can deliver”.
“There’s an almost philosophical connection between Matera’s ancient stone dwellings, etched directly into the limestone, and a steel frame handmade in Italy,” says Battaglin, winner of the 1981 Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España.
“Just as Matera has withstood the test of time, handcrafted steel frames have maintained their special place in cycling despite newer materials coming and going. We’ve created a bike that connects riders to the terrain in the same way Matera’s ancient structures connect to the landscape – through harmony, not domination,” he adds.
Available in five standard sizes, the Matera is disc brake only and compatible exclusively with 1X groupsets, providing up to 700×50 tire clearance for tackling the great expanse. The gravel grinder also features a Universal Derailleur Hanger (UDH), for easy replacement.
Additionally, customers can choose from 20 unique finishes to make their Matera a true expression of personal style. The “Matera Minimal” range offers five sleek, solid colors, while the premium “Matera Select” upgrade unlocks 15 of Officina Battaglin’s famed cromovelato finishes — translucent layers that create a stunning, shimmering effect over the steel frame. “Gravel bikes are about freedom,” says Alex Battaglin, CEO of Officina Battaglin.
“That freedom shouldn’t stop at the ride. We want riders to feel connected to their Matera, not just through how it rides but through how it looks and feels,” he adds.
The Matera is available for order now from Officina Battaglin or through its network of local boutique bike shops. The custom-finished frameset is priced at € 2,100 plus applicable taxes, which includes the frameset, a choice of 5 solid-paint color options (Matera Minimal), a headset and thru axles.
