Shimano recently launched its new Evolve range of gravel-specific apparel that spans jerseys, jackets, a vest and bib tights that are designed to tackle the rigors of cool weather while traversing the terrain less traveled.
That said, with Jack Frost starting to rear his head here in New England, the perfect backdrop was set to put the Evolve Merino All-Season jersey to the test.
As its title implies, the Evolve Merino All-Season jersey is designed for year-round gravel adventures, combining soft, lightweight synthetic material on the front and sleeves with temperature-regulating Merino wool in the back, resulting in an excellent blend of comfort and warmth for temperatures that range from 50 to 60°F.
Elsewhere, the jersey features a raised collar that provides insulation from the elements, along with ample storage via three large back pockets plus a zippered waterproof pocket that provides space for all your ride essentials, while visibility is enhanced courtesy of reflective bronze elements on the pockets and sleeves that can be seen from all directions, helping keep riders more visible in low-light riding conditions.
So, how does the Evolve Merino All-Season jersey perform? In a word stellar.
The combination of fabrics culminates into a jersey worthy of facing chilly days in the saddle, providing the requisite amount of warmth, loft and feel against the body, all the while leaving the rider feeling warm and comfortable.
Additionally, the Evolve Merino All-Season jersey can be used as an effective layer as well, pairing it with a lightweight windbreaker, or even a full-on winter jacket when the mercury really starts to dip.
Regarding sizing, I would say the jersey falls somewhere between a “club” and a “race” fit, making it a good choice for ectomorphs and endomorphs alike.
The Evolve Merino All-Season jersey sells for $140 in sizes ranging from SM to XXL, with a color palette that takes in shades of autumn like Moss Green, Mirror Brown and Mirror Gray.
