Tadej Pogačar Nominated for Laureus World Sportsman of the Year

After an exceptional 2024 season, in which he won the triple crown of cycling with the pink jersey at the Giro, the yellow at the Tour, and the rainbow at the World Championship, celebrating a total of 25 victories, Tadej Pogačar already been declared the Slovenian cyclist and athlete of the year, as well as the world cyclist of the year (Velo d’Or). He is also among the nominees for the Laureus World Sports Awards. The winners will be announced on April 21 in Madrid.

Pogačar is joined among the nominees for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year by Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz, who won two Grand Slam tournaments and the silver medal at the Paris Olympics in 2024, Swede Armand Duplantis, Olympic champion and world record holder in pole vault, Leon Marchand, who won four swimming gold medals for France at the Olympics, and four-time Formula One champion Dutchman Max Verstappen.

The nominees for the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year are American gymnast Simone Biles, Spanish footballer Aitana Bonmati, Belarusian tennis player Aryna Sabalenka, Dutch athlete Sifan Hassan, her Kenyan colleague Faith Kipyegon, and also American athlete Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone.

Pogačar was already among the nominees for the Laureus Breakthrough of the Year in 2021 after his first Tour victory, but did not receive the award. In fact, no Slovenian athlete has received the Laureus, which has been awarded since 2000. In the most prestigious categories for sportsman or sportswoman of the year, alpine skier Tina Maze was nominated twice (2014 and 2015).

Before the announcement of the Laureus winners on April 21 in Madrid, Pogačar, who opened the 2025 season with a victory at the UAE Tour, will tackle numerous one-day races. The first will be this Saturday at Strade Bianche, where he will be chasing his second consecutive and overall third victory.
