The Beam RS 1000 Offers Cyclists the Safety of a Rear-View Camera

Harnessing the power of AI, the Beam RS 1000 is designed to provide urban cyclists with the safety they need when traversing the cityscape by offering rear-view imaging, plus dashcam-style recording, smart taillight and brake light functions, as well as eBike system integration, via any smartphone.

Where does the AI come in?

Instead of posing a distraction to riders by constantly requiring them to look down at the screen, AI can detect threats such as other approaching vehicles or cyclists, and send out an instant alert, quickly notifying the rider to take evasive action.

Developed by Alps Alpine, which introduced it a while back at various trade shows in Europe, the Beam RS 1000 is now being sold by the French safety specialist THE BEAM for €349 (approximately $397).

Key features:

  • Live Rear-View HD Camera: 720p HD 158° wide-angle camera streams live view to a paired smartphone (iOS or Android app available)
  • AI-based Hazard Detection: offline in-app algorithm detects fast-moving vehicles and other similar threats, providing instant visual alerts via the connected smartphone & auditory alerts from its own built-in buzzer
  • Accident Recording & Dashcam: Automatic recording also saves video 10 seconds before and 50 seconds after detected incidents for post-accident analysis or insurance claim
  • Smart Brake Lighting: bright multiple-LED StVZO-approved taillight with multi-stage/intensity brake light function
  • Shimano E-Tube eBike system integration for long-lasting power or Di2 button controls
  • 1/4-turn quick-release seatpost or rack mounting
  • 4-hour runtime, with USB-C recharging or continuous external power
  • 32Gb internal memory, plus a MicroSD slot for longer recording
  • 105 x 33 x 40mm and 160g claimed weight
