Jonathan Milan claimed his second stage victory in this year’s Tirreno-Adriatico today, charging over the line seemingly uncontested to win the sprint finale.
The Italian rider stormed across the finish with his arms held aloft in Follonica after perfectly maneuvering his way through the bunch during a frantic final few hundred meters to seize the day’s honors after 192 kilometers of racing that departed Camaiore.
Meanwhile, Filippo Ganna held onto the overall lead after storming to victory in yesterday’s opening individual time trial.
Today’s win was Milan’s fourth of the season after claiming two stages on the UAE Tour—where he also topped the points classification—and one at the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana.
Earlier, a slow pace allowed Davide Bais and Alessandro Tonelli to reach Milan and early breaker Manuele Tarozzi with 73km remaining, but the Italian trio was destined to get caught before the real action at the end of the stage began.
Once they were reined in, the sprinters jostled for position, with Milan’s Lidl-Trek team doing an exemplary job of leading their top sprinter to the front.
In the meantime, David Gaudu was one of a clutch of riders to crash out just as the stage was heading toward its finale, with the French winner of the recent Tour of Oman being forced to abandon the race.
