Chris Froome wins Tour de France as Andre Greipel makes it four!
Andre Greipel won the 21st and final stage of the Tour de France today, after edging out Bryan Coquard (Europcar) and Alexander Kristoff (Katusha) at the finish on the Champs-Élysées – to marked his fourth stage victory in this year’s race.
The Finale
With 200 meters remaining, Kristoff led the head of the peloton through the final corner along the Champs. However, just as Kristoff look poised for victory, the Norwegian rider lost his impetus, as Greipel timed his sprint to perfection to fend-off a challenge from Coquard.
Unfortunately for Mark Cavendish (Etixx-QuickStep), the British rider was unable to find his way through the chaos to seize another victory on the Champs-Élysées – as he had so many times in the past.
For Chris Froome, the maillot jaune safely crossed the finish arm in arm with his Team Sky teammates, to celebrate his second Tour de France title.
Additionally, Froome secured the coveted King of the Mountains jersey as well, effectively becoming the first rider since Eddy Merckx to claim both jerseys in a single Tour.
Meanwhile, Peter Sagan (Tinkoff-Saxo) finished in seventh place today, to claim his fourth Green Jersey in a row, while Nairo Quintana (Movistar) finished in Paris to secure second place on the podium, along with the white jersey, with Alejandro Valverde taking third place honors.
