Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) stormed to victory in today’s rain-soaked Tour de France Singapore Criterium, outsprinting Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty) and Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck), who finished second and third, respectively, in a hotly contested race to the finish.
“It’s pretty special to be here for the first time and to bring home a nice result. I have to say that I was not expecting this weather. The last couple of days were pretty hot, but today for the first hour of the race it was raining a lot and that can sometimes influence the race. But the road was pretty good and it was clean and I was able to ride really well on the bike,” said a jubilant Milan.
Earlier, UAE Team Emirates-XRG’s Domen Novak was the first rider to attack, but the Slovenian was later reined in with 17 laps to go.
With a just over 30 kilometers remaining, the peloton regrouped, with Team Singapore’s Arfan Bin Faisal seizing the opportunity to launch an attack.
Meanwhile, with 10 kilometers to go, Philipsen narrowly edged out Milan to claim the intermediate sprint, with Ben O’Connor (Jayco AlUla) and Ivan Romeo (Movistar) also featuring in the mix.
From there, a small group containing O’Connor, Romeo, Primož Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), Ben Healy and Tim Wellens (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) opened up a slight advantage as the criterium entered into the final 10 kilometers, with Healy jettisoning his fellow breakaway companions during the final lap.
However, the Irish rider was reeled in with 900 meters remaining, paving the way for a sprint finale, with Milan emerging victorious.
