Michael Albasini (Orica-GreenEdge) won stage 2 of this year’s Tour de Romandie today, after beating Jarlinson Pantano (IAM Cycling) and Julian Alaphilippe (Etixx-QuickStep), with a well-timed sprint following the climb of the Col de la Vue des Alpes.
As a result of today’s victory, Albasini moved up into the overall race lead, with a 10 second advantage over his teammate Ivan Santaromita and Team Sky’s Chris Froome.
Meanwhile, previous race leader, Geraint Thomas, suffered a puncture just as the race was approaching the final climb of the day, thus stymying the Sky rider’s chances at defending his title.
The Finale
The final kilometers of today stage, saw a flurry of attacks along the Col de la Vue des Alpes, with Rein Taaramae (Astana) making his way from the rear of the peloton, to slip away during the long descent into Saint-Imier.
However, the Astana rider was eventually reeled back in during the final 2 kilometers.
