Lars Petter Nordhaug (Team Sky) claimed the opening stage of this year’s Tour de Yorkshire today, after emerging as the fastest rider from a late breakaway group of five riders, to beat Thomas Voeckler (Europcar) and Stephane Rossetto (Cofidis) in a sprint finish in Scarborough.
Nordhaug now heads the overall classification by 4 seconds over Voeckler, and 6 seconds over Rossetto.
Meanwhile, Marcel Kittel (Giant-Alpecin) abandoned the race at the 100 kilometer mark, due to illness.
