Ben Hermans (BMC Racing) won the 3rd and final stage of this year’s Tour de Yorkshire today, after commencing a bold attack during the final 10 kilometers, to claim a solo victory ahead of his teammate Greg Van Avermaet and Julien Simon (Cofidis, Solutions Credits).
“I never thought that I could be on a high level here in Yorkshire and the weather conditions were not really my favourite. Today was a good day and I had a hard moment on the second to last KOM when it stated to rain but then I felt better and I had a go,” Hermans said.
Following the final climb of the day, Hermans emerged from what remained of a reduced peloton, to make a go of it alone.
From there, the Belgian rider succeeded in making his way to the lone survivor of the day’s breakaway group – Lawson Craddock.
Tired and worn, the American rider was unable to stay onboard with Hermans during the closing 5 kilometers. And, with no rivals in sight, the BMC rider rode his way to the finish in solo fashion.
Meanwhile, Team Sky push the peloton all the way to the finish, but it was Van Avermaet who would win the sprint for second place.
Nevertheless, Sky’s Lars Petter Nordhaug managed to finish safely in the peloton to defended his overall lead, and claim the title for this year’s inaugural race.
