VAN RYSEL Launches First Carbon VR 35 and VR 50 Wheelsets

After more than two years of development, VAN RYSEL has launched its first carbon wheelsets dubbed the VR 35 and the VR 50, all-around sets of hoops that are aimed at both road and gravel exploits thanks to their hooked, tubeless and standard clincher designs that can accomodate tires up a hefty 55mm.

The VR 35 is designed with climbing in mind, focusing on low weight and responsiveness, tipping the scales at an impressive 1,490 grams.

  • Front-wheel weight: 670 g
  • Rear-wheel weight: 820 g
  • Front-wheel inertia: 0.0393 kg.m²
  • Rear-wheel inertia: 0.0392 kg.m²

VR 50 MORE AERODYNAMIC

Complementary to the VR 35, the VR 50 is aimed at cyclists who enjoy longer jaunts, especially ones that culminate into a sprint finish, providing 16% improved aerodynamics compared to the VR 35 (wind tunnel tested with a weighted average of 45 km/h).

  • Front-wheel weight: 710 g
  • Rear-wheel weight: 850 g
  • Front-wheel inertia: 0.0426 kg.m²
  • Rear-wheel inertia: 0.0418 kg.m²

CFD STUDY

Just like its flagship RCR road bike, VAN RYSEL engineers designed the VR 35 and VR 50 based on CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) studies, relying on critical data to analyze airflow around the wheels in order to minimize drag, utilizing several prototype designs to define the best structural characteristics and maximize performance on the road.

THE WIND TUNNEL

After the CFD study, VAN RYSEL engineers conducted a series of tests to validate the final profile choices, wherein the VR 35 and VR 50 were evaluated individually and then mounted on a bike to analyze their behavior in real-world conditions, allowing for precise measurement of their aerodynamic performance. Moreover, the tests were conducted under different wind angles, up to 20 degrees, enabling engineers to define weighted aerodynamic performance while the tests were performed at speeds of 30 km/h and 45 km/h, replicating race conditions to ensure excellent results.

Additionally, the tests revealed that the VR 35 and VR 50 offer their best performance when equipped with 28mm tires, ensuring an optimal balance between aerodynamics, rolling efficiency, and comfort.

STIFFNESS TEST

According to VAN RYSEL, in-depth tests were conducted to evaluate the stiffness of the wheels, revealing an average stiffness increase of 5% compared to other models tested.

The VR 35 and VR 50 are assembled in Lille, France, in the same factory as the RCR bikes.

“An extremely meticulous and precise assembly process, thanks to a brand-new machine specially designed for the VR 35 and VR 50. Each wheel is tensioned to ±20 kg, ensuring a durable and high-performing wheel over time. The wheels are also delivered with a replacement spoke kit, allowing cyclists to anticipate any mishaps and offering peace of mind to adventurous riders,” says VAN RYSEL.

The VR 35 wheels retail for €799.99, while the VR 50 wheels are priced at €899.99.
