Both Juan Ayuso and Joao Almeida moved up the general classification in the Vuelta a España today, after UAE Team Emirates-XRG conquered the stage 5 team time trial.
Meanwhile, Jonas Vingegaard reclaimed the leader’s red jersey despite Visma-Lease a Bike coming home eight seconds down, with overnight leader David Gaudu’s Groupama-FDJ displaying a solid resistance to stay in contention in the overall GC, although he slipped to sixth overall.
Earlier, the almost pan-flat course saw Lotto the first team down the ramp outside the Salvador Dali museum, setting the fastest time until Lidl-Trek dethroned them by 18 seconds.
As Lidl-Trek enjoyed their time in the hotseat, the pre-stage top contenders were getting up to speed, with Ineos Grenadiers setting the fastest time over the first sector, but they faded in the closing kilometers.
From there, Visma-Lease a Bike looked competitive through the first sector, but slipped to tenth by the mid-point, only to bring it back and finish strongly. As their four remaining riders entered the final straight, it looked as if they would run UAE close, but the clock ticked to red and they would have to settle for second and the overall lead.
