Marcel Kittel won the final stage of this year’s Tour of Britain in Liverpool today, after beating Mark Cavendish (Omega Pharma-Quickstep) and Nicola Ruffoni (Bardiani CSF) in a high-speed sprint to the finish.
While Cavendish looked poised to take the stage win, Kittel tactfully rode in the slipstream of his lead-out man, Mark Renshaw, forcing Cavendish to accelerate first.
However, despite Cavendish’s initial jump, Kittel was able to gain ground on the "Manx Missile", as they fought for the line.
Meanwhile, Dylan van Baarle (Garmin Sharp) finished safely in the peloton, to secure the overall race victory, with Michal Kwiatkowski (Omega Pharma-Quickstep) in second, and Bradley Wiggins (Sky) rounding out the final podium.
