China has always been the kingdom of bicycles, with entire generations relying upon them as their main source of transportation – in both daily travel, as well as for transport and cargo.
Now that China’s economy has progressed, changing the way millions of Chinese have turned to the automobile as their main conveyance, bikes in many cases, have been relegated to the poorest classes, if not, been permanently put out of use.
Photographer Zhao Xiaomeng latest project, “Bicycles in Beijing, Now “, immortalizes what remains of some of these old bikes, and reminds us of this epochal change.
