Magnus Cort (Uno-X Mobility) claimed stage 2 of the Critérium du Dauphiné today, after lone escapee Bruno Armirail (Decathlon-AG2R) was swept up just before the finish the finish line atop the misty Col de la Loge
The Danish rider made a final acceleration to catch and pass Armirail, while holding off Primož Roglič (Bora-Hansgrohe), follwed by Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike) came home in third ahead of Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek).
As a result of today’s victory, Cort wrested the yellow jersey from overnight leader Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) who was distanced on the upper reaches of the day’s final classified climb
Race Highlights
The stage was animated by a five-rider brreakway group featuring Armirail, Mathis Le Berre (Arkéa-B&B), Jonas Gregaard (Lotto-Dstny), Xandro Meurisse (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Filippo Conca (Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team)
From there, the quintet opebed up a a modest three minute advantage over the pelton during final 30km, facing both the Côte de Saint-Georges-en-Couzan and Col de la Croix Ladret in quick succession before the final aacent of the Col de la Loge.
With their lead rduced to around a minute, Armirail decided attacked with 10km remaining, later opening up a 45 second gap over his former breakeay companions as he crested the top of the Crox Ladret with seven kilometers remaining.
Heading under the flamme rouge, the Armirail was still clinging to 20 second lead, but a late surge from Uno-X doomed brought the curtains down on the French rider’s hopes and he was caught inside the final 200 meters.
