In an odd twist of fate, Romain Grégoire (Groupama-FDJ) was declared the winner of stage 3 of the Itzulia Basque Country today, after Alex Aranburu (Cofidis), the first rider across the line, was relegated by commissaries after the race.

After attacking during the closing kilometers of the hilly 157-kilometer stage, Aranburu was disqualified from the victory after race officials confirmed that the Spanish rider took a shortcut across a roundabout in the finishing town of Beasain.As a result, Grégoire was subsequently given the win after officials reviewed footage from the last part of the stage.

Meanwhile, the overall standings remained the same, with Max Schachmann (Soudal-QuickStep) still in the lead after he snatched valuable bonus seconds by finishing close behind Grégoire (Groupama-FDJ).

Earlier, a large group of around 30 riders jettisoned the peloton early on. But, the group was quickly reeled back in, leaving just Bruno Armirail out front alone, although the UAE Team Emirates-controlled peloton kept him on a short leash.

Indeed, the French rider was later caught along the fifth climb of the day, the Mandubia with 70 kilometers to go, prompting Florian Lipowitz to launch an attack, with Isaac Del Toro and Wilco Kelderman also animating things.

In the meantime, Brandon McNulty and Harold Tejada gained a small lead over a heavily reduced peloton in the final kilometers of the climb, only to be shut down by Florian Lipowitz.

Shortly after Marc Soler, Rudy Molard and Clément Berthet attacked, with the trio quickly opening up a gap of around a minute over the peloton.

From there, Berthet attacked his fellow breakaway companions with 37 kilometers to go in the toughest climb of the day, later prompting a response from Schachmann in defense of his lead.

Berthlet was later caught on the final climb, with Schachmann sprinting to the summit.

However, following the climb, João Almeida attacked before being caught by Aranburu on the descent, with the duo going solo with 2 kilometers to go.

While Aranburu later soared to victory, he was ultimately relegated after taking the wrong side of a roundabout during the last kilometer, with officials later awarding the win to Grégoire.
