Axel Laurance (Ineos Grenadiers) claimed stage 3 of the Itzulia Basque Country today, after the French rider launched from the wheel of fellow breakaway companion Igor Arrieta (AE Team Emirates-XRG) during the final few meters to seize the day’s honors.
The duo was part of a larger 16-rider breakaway that formed mid-race, but they later attacked along the summit of the Sarasola with around 25 kilometers to go.
Meanwhile, Natnael Tesfatsion (Movistar) led home the rest of the group to grab the final spot on the podium. , who was also part of the original breakaway, crossed the line in third place from the chase-group sprint.
Elsewhere, Paul Seixas (Decathlon CMA CGM Team) finished safely in the main field to maintain his overall race lead with a 1:59 advantage over Primož Roglič, followed Florian Lipowitz (both Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe), who sits at 2:08 behind.
