The same engineers who developed the staggering £6000 chain, which Bradley Wiggins used during his successful Hour Record challenge last June, have taken what they learned from the experience and created a more affordable version for the rest of us cycling mortals.
While not cheap at around $200 either, Muc-Off claims its Nanotube Optimized Chain can save cyclists up to six watts by virtue of its smoother and quicker performance.
Muc-Off calls it a treatment, because it involves a special application process which can be applied to either a Shimano, SRAM, or Campagnolo chain.
According to Muc-Off, “each chain is painstakingly speed graded and run-in under load during which data is taken to find its optimum. Now it’s sonic cleaned in several formulas and hand treated with the Nanotube formula, then nanotube particles are applied.”
In addition, Muc-Off says, “the treatment will apparently last for 400 miles in dry conditions and 250 miles in wet conditons “with no severe dropoff in performance”. But once the treatment has worn off then you should apply Muc-Off’s Nanotube Speed Film Lube ($50) which will bring your chain back to within 1-2 watts of when it’s at its optimum”.
