Cervelo has updated its S5 road bike, making it more aerodynamic thanks to a revised head tube and seat tube, as well as a revamped cockpit, resulting in a claimed 6.3 watt increase over the outgoing model across a -15° to +15° yaw sweep. Moreover, Cervelo says its testing also reveals that the new S5 yields a 10.7 watts power increase over the Cannondale SuperSix, and is 15.7 watts more efficient than the Specialized SL8.
In addition to its new silhouette, the S5 gets further aero gains via Cervelo’s one-piece HB19 handlebar and stem, which sees the top section and drops reduced by 3.8 and 2mm, respectively, while the bar ends have been treated to an increased flare as well.
Interestingly, while the S5 frame and cockpit were put on a diet to the tune of 124 grams, the fork weighs in tad heavier, adding some 50 grams this time around.
Elsewhere, Cervelo made a few tweaks the the S5’s geometry, namely, a slightly lower bottom bracket in order to make way for larger tires, which is now optimized around 29mm tires compare to 26mm, while fork offset has been adjusted to make way for larger tires as well. Otherwise, the angles have remained mostly the same.
Additionally, Cervelo has launched a new wheelset alongside the S5 called the Reserve 57|64 Turbulent Aero, which is designed to further enhance the bike’s aerodynamic signature courtesy of deeper front and rear rim depths, while also bolstering stability in conjunction with the newly sculpted, asymmetrical seat tube.
“The offset of the wheels perfectly matches the asymmetry of the S5 seat tube, and they tuck right into the wheel cutouts. This ensures that air flows smoothly over the entire bike, and Reserve’s Turbulent Aero approach makes them incredibly stable, even in crosswinds,” says Cervelo.
The new S5 is available as a module (frame, fork, HB19 cockpit, headset, SP34 carbon seat post and thru axles) for $7,500, as well as a number of complete builds that span Shimano Ultegra and Dura Ace Di2, to SRAM Force AXS and RED.
