After spending its first years traversing the road less traveled, OPEN Cycle has finally taken to the tarmac with the launch of its first-ever road bike called the MIN.D (aka minimalist design).
Taking geometry and ride quality cues from its successful range of gravel/roadplus models, the MIN.D features a carbon fiber construction that relies upon simple tube shapes and profiles to achieve a lightweight design that tips the scales at an impressive 870g, along with what might very well be the lightest disc-brake specific road fork at 335g (uncut).
To accomplish this, OPEN Cycle devised a geometry that angles around 72.5° headtube and a 73.5° seattube, as well as 71mm bottom bracket drop that places the MIN.D somewhere between an all-out racer and a comfort road bike.
There’s also a 25mm integrated seat-mast that claims to increase compliance, save weight and simplify the design. Moreover, a proprietary clamp offers up to 15mm of height adjustment, along with another clamp option that provides an additional 15-35mm of adjustment, which the company jokingly refers to as the MOCT (Measure Once, Cut Twice).
“So much is talked about comfort. But it’s not about gimmicks, elastomers, electronic suspension or sub-atomic vibration-damping graphene-infused nano-particles. Comfort is about finding ways to ride further, for longer, while enjoying it,” says OPEN Cycle co-found Gerard Vroomen.
Other features that highlight the MIN.D are flat disc brake mounts with 160mm rotors that don’t require the use of an adapter, internal cable routing, a BB386 EVO bottom bracket shell, a Cane Creek Integrated IS42/28.6 upper and OPEN-Custom integrated IS47/38 lower headset, as well as 100 x 12 and 142 x 12 thru Carbon-Ti thru axles.
MIN.D is offered in a standard “Midnight Blue” color, with the option of custom paint through OPEN Cycle’s RTP (Ready To Paint Option), which allows customers to create their own custom finish design with a painter of their choice.
The MIN.D is available for pre-order at $3,600, which includes the frame and fork, a headset, seat tube top clamp, rail clamp, thru-axles, 2 RD hangers, 2 MultiStops (Di2, eTap), cable exit stop, noise-reduction foam sleeves, bottle cage bolts and manual, with expected delivery in July 2020.
